Regulating internet privacy isn't an easy task. Almost everything that is put on the internet can be seen, even if you think it’s private. There is a thing called The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) which regulates intruders from entering various computer networks and different electronic communications. This act has made it illegal to hack into emails and email accounts. It also prohibits intentional interception and the hacking of any electronic communications happening. In my opinion, if someone is not 100% sure they should be sharing something on the internet that should not be seen, do not put it up in the first place. Certain internet privacy services can only go so far.
Internet security and safety is a little more reliable than trusting the privacy aspect of the internet. This is because you are able to download an internet security system on your computer to help protect your computer from any bad sites or viruses. There is a program you can get that is called Norton Internet Security. Norton provides your computer with what is called SONAR technology to keep users ahead of any developing threats that they aren’t aware of. It also uses a fast detecting system that will stop most threats before even opening a certain site so no harm is done to your computer. I myself use Norton and I am very happy I do. I like that when I Google something, it automatically shows me the “OK Norton” logo which shows me that I can click on a particular site without causing harm to my computer.
Wikis are when a group of people gather, work together and share information online. However, wikis information can also be changed which can either be a good or a bad thing because anyone is able to edit and change the information at any time. You may never know if what you are reading is accurate or not. I myself try my best to avoid websites like Wikipedia just because I am not 100% sure that the information I am researching and reading is completely accurate.

  1. Hi Nina!

Your right Wiki's are a good place to share and gather information from others. However, Wiki's are not always the most reliable sources. Many sources are shared from UN-qualified sources, individuals who may be right but are not always. Best way to acquire information online is by visiting .edu and .gov websites.

  2. The information you shared about protecting your computer is very helpful; and Norton sounds very reliable and reassuring. There are so many sites that have viruses attached to them I'm always afraid that I'm going to harm my computer. I agree with Nick that while Wiki's can be useful, especially for cases such as this class, it is always best to gather reliable resources.

  3. I agree, Nina- I think wikis are not the most reliable sources for information because they can be edited by those who may not know what they are talking about. Still, I think many wikis have good information to offer. I think the best policy is to use wikis as a jumping off point and then hunt for academic sources and verification of information.

  4. There are so many viruses out there that I am very skeptical of which websites to trust. I used to have Norton but my subscription expired and I never renewed it. I was very pleased with the services it offered.

  5. Although sites like Wikipedia aren't always regarded as "accurate", I would like to note that there are a great deal of people who work to ensure their accuracy. This cause is important to many because it's a "by the people, for the people" situation. With any media, it's the job of the viewer to confirm accuracy and look at more than one source.

  6. i agree. wiki's can sometimes not be reliable but they could also be helpful in getting started with a project.

  7. I totally agree with you about the accuracy of wikispaces. Also, i agree with the fact that if you don't feel 100% on something do not post it at all. It is ridiculous what people post on sites these days. It's like their drones and they don't even think, they just post. Great post. Very detailed.

  8. You make a good point saying that anything you put on the internet can be seen. I don't trust any privacy settings for that reason. I just don't put anything up that I wouldn't want people to see. I also don't trust wikis at all, but sometimes I look through their sources. They surprisingly have reliable sources sometimes.

  9. Nina you make a good point wiki's are not always reliable. But I think that people should think twice before posting things up on the internet that they don't want other people to view.

  10. I believe someone made a point of them being a good starting point especially on a topic you know little about. You then use some of the sources listed to verify it....many wikis provide simple explanations of complex concepts. There are also specialty wikis like in health care.

Just wanted to comment on Norton....NO program is fail proof. Norton let a virus through to out computer ...so now we switched to another program.
